What would he be doing back since Mr. Gregson wiped the floor with him in ep 4.03? At the time, he seemed a relatively minor character.
He could always just make a minor appearance, like at Rose's coming out ball.
True, though as a commoner it would be strange for Mr. Sampson to appear at the ball. And what a waste of a great actor's time that his character be dragged back but not used to advance any plot line.
A commoner in the sense that he is not addressed as having a title, but of sufficient means to join a club that would also have Lord Grantham as a member. By the 1920s, titles are meaning less and actual wealth are meaning more.
The real question is how is it that Gregson, on an editor's / publisher's wages was able to keep pace with peers to Lord Grantham. If Robert took a beating, just the antes could have been more than Gregson makes in a year. :)
Ah, interesting. Well then if Mr. Sampson can end up at the ball, all the better. Pair him with Rose and there'll be a lovely (and rediculously unbelievable) mess to continue with in season 5.
Aside, I agree that Mr. Gregson is the real mystery; he's obviously the better card sharp. I love this character. Imho, he's the only love interest with flaws interesting enough to irk/challenge so many viewers. But that's for another discussion.
I don't know what Sampson's role will be, but he if he was paired with Rose that definitely would make a mess I feel. Rose blindly enters relationships with men sometimes, like with Margadale. Sam Thawley and Jack Ross at least were honest men who really cared for her.
What do you think?
