Does anyone else find it odd that in Episode 1.02 the Earl gives Charlie Grigg 20 pounds out of his wallet. That's about 1,600 pounds or about $2,700 dollars. Why would he be carrying so much cash in his wallet?
I thuoght the same thing, but did not go to the effort of looking up the exact figure. To put into context, the typical yearly wage for a second footman or kitchen maid in 1905 was £24, a second maid was £22. It might have been ever so slightly higher by 1912.
I also went frame by frame through the scene where Robert pays Grigg to see if the notes were printed on both sides. Prior to 1928, they would only have been printed on one side. It is hard to tell, but does look like they are only printed on one side, but there never is a clear view of the back.
