It took Mary and Matthew 8 years(2 seasons) to get together but Mary and Blake, about a few days. And you also have Mary and Gillingham which took him no time to propose. Isn't that weird?
It also took 4 years for Bates and Anna to kiss on-screen, and Carson and Mrs. Hughes SPOILER ALERT: Got married after supposedly over 12 (TWELVE!) years working with each other?! It seems like the relationships they go most in-depth in take the longest to start. Maybe Julian Fellowes wants to show their relationship and how they acted with each other before they were actually an official couple.
Tom and Mary will not get together... sorry folks maybe that would be the best plot line for a drama as it is being written (despite not realistic at all for time period) but more importantly the real actor behind the Tom character is landing big movie roles ... that is how the characters leave. They had more notice of him leaving so they are slowly writing him out. I suspect the minute they decided to write the Bunting thing as a non-starter was when he announced to the producers that he will not renew past season six (ie two 3 year contracts) They get famous/land roles and leave OR for those that don't they seem to get recyled plot lines until we all give up on the series and they decide to cancel it or at least not renew for the 3 year contracts the actos are under. All cast interviews have said that they don't think they can go past season 6 (ie two 3 year contracts). So they are going to have to write up a nice final season soon since realistically even the actos know they can't play themselves 20 years on. Maybe Fellows will write a nice 1930-1940 series but I think this is it for this particular cast and series. Shame Dan Stevens left as quickly as he did because I think all plots they had really planned out had revolved around them and then that threw them for a loop. But good for Dan Steven since he has gone on to have many many new movie roles and plays. His performance in movies has been amazing (if you didn't know he was a Downton Abbey English guy you would not know he wasn't American the way he can switch his accent). I wish just as good luck to Allan Leech who also seems to have serious acting chops. Wish them well and cheer them on into thier new roles- quit wishing they stay in a stale role folks.
I agree with you, even though Tom was a great character on the show he's gone now. He any wasn't right for Mary in the sense that it was more of a brother-sister relationship bonded over loss.
This is way off topic, but is that why Daisy got more indepedent this series? I've noticed her name in a few things.
I think Mary will end up marrying Evelyn Napier in the end.
He’s been there showing interest in Mary since the very first season but she always overlooks him. He’s always been overshadowed by other more flamboyant men – often men he’s brought to Downton himself, Pamuk & Charles Blake were both brought to Downton by Napier.
He’s from an aristocratic family and grew up in the same circles that Mary did. He’s quiet, intelligent, kind, thoughtful, respectful, loves the county life sports of riding & hunting that Mary does. And because of the government study he & Blake worked on - he has a unique kind of knowledge about these grand old estates – so he’s best positioned to help Mary modernize Downton and help it survive into the future.
Something will happen to make her finally see this bloke who’s just been in the back ground for her so far. And I think the clincher is - of all the suitors Mary’s had – he’s the one who’s the most like her father.
A viscount is below Mary - she's someone who wants a high title; Earl, Duke.
It was a common trace in Mary be atracted to more flamboyant men in the show, Matthew was the exception, but also he was the heir to Downton. The #1 love of Mary is Downton, then all the men that she fell attracted are who can exite her.
With Napier or another man with a title she would be force to leave Downton an that is imposible, as i said, she always wanted to reign that place.
Remember that when Pamuk arrived she inmediatily got excited for him, then Gillinghan, Blake and finally Talbot. For a lot of reasons Napier seemed to be the perfect choice, he was intelligent, with good manners, tittled, rich, etc; but in some sense Mary, even in her 30´s is a like a teenager, Robert and Blake noticed that she likes treat men like toys.
Napier is like "the Edith" betwen the suitors, always overlooked and even pittied by Mary, remember that she even used him to get a date with Talbot in the last season.
About caring or not about being tittled, remember that Anna said that the fact she was very affected because she wasnt going to be next countess of Grantham, always in several ocassions Mary said that she was going to be the next countess (when Matthew was alive). Then she doesnt cared too much, except when Edith was about to outrank her, then, being tittled was a important thing again. After being marrying to Talbot and being reprimended by all the family (and noticing how low was) she helped Edith to cameback with Bertie, but in the first moment she was determinated to prevent that Edith could be the next marchioness.
What do you think?
