There are definitely some things I want to see happen myself, especially if this season is to be the last one:
1. Gregson returns to Edith a free man, marries her, they raise their daughter and have another child.
2. Mary and Tom find happiness. I'm not totally sure if any of their present suitors are the right ones for them, but if they don't find suitors they can always form a relationship similar to that of Carson and Mrs Hughes.
3. Tom finds his place in life, whether that be in Ireland, America, or at Downton.
4. Relatives of Tom come to visit him and see Sybbie.
5. Daisy goes to Mr Mason's farm permanently.
6. Rose grows up a bit. Personally it'd be nice I think if Jack Ross reenters her life.
7. Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame each make cameo appearances.
finally after more than a month and a half we saw the finale
was it good was it bad was it ok......
i'd say it was pretty goody good bcz i think JF wanted to finish on a festive and happy note rather than a gloomy one but that doesnt make the overall season as a strong one at all. all through the season we never saw the peak that downton reached over the years and it was only the last 2 epsds and the christmas ones which salvaged some pride.
they were so many things that went astray so many relationships that makes u think what on earth JF was writing about if in the end he was gonna negate everything that he was writing for. i mean mary and 2 duffers, tom and bunting merton and isobel and so many others as well one feel so frustrated bcz mary and the 2 suitors dilemma was not this season but the entire 4th season as well and in the end he completey rubs it off and discards it. then why the hell we put up with it in the first place!
and i cant believe that anna and bates boring story is still not finished there is still the torment of watching it play next season ofr Gods sake end it sooner
there was some hope though in the three scenes b/w mary and new entry named Henry Talbot. u know these 3 scenes offered more charm and fun than the entire scenes b/w mary and tony and charles in all 4th and 5th season combined and that is sayingsomething. why the hell JF never could find a guy like that in season 4 he basically made us wait for something that should have come sooner. Mathew Goode is and ideal match for Mary bcz it is the first time since Dan steves left the show that mary has been left wanting for more from a guy rather than the opposite.
we have seen tony and charles strutting their stuff about mary and she wasnt even looking at them and those 3 scenes with henry talbot reminds me of season 1 scenes with dan. the look on mary's face when henry drives away when she is all over him says a lot. why the hell JF couldnt write anything like that 2 years before. and the casting is rather brilliant as well they do look a good couple together
whether mathhew goode will be back or not depends but this is the only silver lining i found in the entire season 5
Would love to see Edith develop her independence and for Tom to slowly fall in love with her. She is really maybe the prettiest of the sisters if they would play up her eyes and smile. She has endured the types of hardships that make her truly interesting.
I would like to see Rose get linked with Lord David Burghley, the real life hurdler who was portrayed in Chariots of Fire as "Lord Lyndsay", played by Nigel Havers.
BTW, Havers has already appeared on Downton Abbey, and I believe Fellows has shown "Burghley House" in his documentary on the great estates.
Dude! Do you know how old everyone would be? That happened like 20 odd years ago!
WWII happened from 1939-1945... 76 years ago!
Actually . . . Season 5 ends at Christmas 1924. So what we are talking about would be to advance the story along another 15 years to the beginning of the war and then adding at least 6 more to deal with the family at the end. Sadly, Little George would be coming of age to serve in the war before it ended, which would certainly add at least one story line, whatever angst would come from it.
Personally and with a good bit of selfishness on my part, I just hate to see the series come to an end. There is so much yet to tell. I'm sure between all of the posters on here we could come up with a great number of plots and subplots.
I did hear somewhere or other a big screen production might come out of all this. One would think that would generate enough money to give production plenty of sweet dreams.
Actually, George would be of age when the war BEGAN. He'd be 18 in 1939, so he'd just be of age that September.
Yeah . . . Thanks HPR1 . . . I didn't take time to do the math. One would think due to his family status and if he ends up as sharp as his mom and dad, George would most likely be officer corp material or possibly enrolled at Oxford or some such place of higher learning. If Julian continues writing I'm sure little George will add a good bit of adventure and plenty of nailbiting story lines.
Imagine if Sybbie decides to return to England before America enters the war to follow in her mother's footsteps and be a nurse. Marigold would follow in Edith's foosteps and be a journalist writing on the war and advocating greater support for it.
Marigold might not be old enough at the start of the war, though I imagine Edith would encourage her to get involved with the magainze somehow, so that when she did come of age she could start working there.
What do you think?
