It's unlikely that he'll return. Do remember that Edith is the proverbial butt-monkey for the series. All the shit that hits the fan happens to her.
This is going to be an unpopular opinion but I don't care because I am as entitled to mine as you all are to yours. I am so sick of all the poor poor Edith stuff. Everyone acts as if she is a saint and has never done anything wrong. Everyone complains over every little thing Mary does and calls her evil, but everything Edith has done gets swept under the table. Edith was an absolute b..ch in the first season. What she did by writing that letter to the Ambassador was horrible. She didn't just hurt her sister with her actions, she hurt the whole family. In the second season she went after the farmer she was working for and was kissing him with his wife just in the house. In Season 4 she went out with, then slept with a married man and paid the consequences by having a child. How does that not make her the same "slut" that she called Mary? So far in Season 5 she has crawled on my last nerve with the constant sour face and mopey behavior and expecting everyone else to do the same and pity her without telling anyone why. Her behavior with her daughter was ridiculous. She asks for another woman to raise her child without knowing the real circumstances and then expects that woman to just let her come over everyday, walk in the house, ignore everyone else in the family and just pay attention to the baby. What exactly was her excuse for coming over every day. I don't blame Mrs Drew for being upset and frankly I hope she is the one to spill the beans about it. I also hope Mary says something like "now who's the slut?"
I get that Edith has not been lucky, but some of this she has brought on herself. She should have to go through the same shame and bad mouthing by the family that Mary was put through before getting to be happy. She should not be let off for all her wrong doings. Both her and Mary have their good and bad points, neither is perfect. But everyone bashes Mary constantly and gives Edith a free ride and it is getting really old.
The odd thing now is the timeline of Mr. Gregson. He left for Germany somewhere in mid 1922, and apparently got into an altercation his first day there. He at least had no communication with Edith since that time. In episode 5.06, Robert connects him with the "Beer Hall Putsch" orĀ "Bierkeller Putsch" as he calls it. That did not occur until November 1923, however Cora indicates that Hitler's conviction (April 1, 1924) was recent, which it would have been from sometime later in 1924.
So what happened in between that made it so that he was not able to communicate for so long, yet was still able to be involved in the beer hall putsch? Did I miss something or is there just more detail yet to be filled in?
I think it was a case that he got into an altercation in 22 and was kidnapped or something - maybe Edith was threatened and he had to keep quiet? - was killed in the Beer Hal Putsch in 23 when he took a chance, and was discovered in 24.
I just think Downton aren't very good at keeping their dates straight - and prob assume that the average viewer won't know most historical dates.
Well, don't forget the show did say that he was "last seen" leaving his hotel for a walk. That does not mean that he died THAT night. He later met brown shirts and then Beer Hall Putsch happened.
I said that above; if he was kidnapped or they threatened Edith, then he'd remain quiet.
What does the above mean?
