Just come back from a holiday in the States and it is true everyone is obsessed with Downton Abbey. What I found most interesting was everyone I spoke to (loads of people) expect Mary and Tom to get together in the end. I know it has been denied by the actors and writers but it seems to me loads of people are going to be disappointed if it doesn't happen. What do people who post here think?
I think they are cute together, but them as a couple would be wrong. And it would be too much soap opera, and although sometimes DA feels like exactly that, I hope Lord Fellowes has better ideas than that.
I'm still in Team Napier!
NOoo! Tom and Mary can't happen - she called him her brother and they're always talking about past loves. He's practically pushing her to try things with Henry Talbot! They are just like siblings and people are allowing themselves to get that bond confused with romance because there's no really close sibling relationship in Downton Abbey. Poor poor Edith.
we must have watch different shows. i have never seen tom pushing mary to try things with henry talbot. what i have watched is that tom is kinda raising his eyebrows and tries to understand what she wants with henry. and they are not brother and sister, their blood has not even the same temprature.
In Episode 6x04 or 6x05, Mary called Tom her brother. So, you have been watching the same show.
when i said that we havent watched the same show i meant the thing with henry talbot , please read carefully. the comment about brother and sister is just a personal opinion.
He has pushed very hard in the last two episodes. I wonder if his line of argument is the writer's way of saying that Mary should be open to marrying somone below her socially (i.e. Tom).
I agree with you about writers wanting Mary to be open to "marrying down" (her words, not mine) but not Tom. It was a touching scene in episode 7 between Tom and Mary but to be honest, we have no functioning sibling relationship to compare this to in the whole of Downton Abbey and I really thought this is what a close brother may say to his sister.
I think Tom is better suited to someone who is more naturally progressive (like Sybil, maybe the new editor), not someone who has to be dragged there.
I like them together platonically, and actually it would probably be social death to marry your sister's widow in those days (wouldn't go over so well now). When his daughter is old enough to go to school Tom should move out of the house into the village where he can hang out with the cool kids (Violet and Isobel). I'd love it if Violet's displeasure with Cora saw her leave the lovely dower house to Tom.
I'm not sure how it would work with the editor if her work is in London. Maybe in the Christmas special they'll have a shoehorned plot of her taking a job on the Grantham Herald.
I think this series has really put the nail in the coffin for Mary and Branson. It would be way too incestuous. Politics, freedom to explore new options and cars are also really Tom things that I don't think Mary would really care enough.
I also think people don't want Tom to be with just anyone. I genuinely felt like he'd betrayed Sybil when he slept with Edna - not because it was extramarital or whatever but because she was manipulative and not particularly well suited to him, the complete opposite of Sybil. Bunting was more his style, even though I didn't like her.
yeah now i think so too. i really wanted them to be togheter but i can see its not going to happen. i dont understand why he returned to downton if not only for marys sake. he is just standing around in a smoking, attending dinners and comforting mary. dont like what they have done with his charecter , in boston at least he would have been building up a future and a buisness. i thought the only reason the show runners brought him back was mary.
i have another question which doesnt belong here, but why was robert so rude to his sister rosemund in the last ep. she looked really offended and hurt, i felt sorry for her.
What do you think?
