I believe Tom will return to DA and claim Edith for his bride. Their relationship is too sincere to leave it smoldering among the kindling in the fireplace. In short, Tom will rise to take control of DA and Edith wil become successful in literary circles. All in all, Marigold and Sybie will become inseparable siblings.
What really hacks me off about Edith is that she says she is going to miss him and wishes he wasn't going but she could have given him a job on her newspaper. He was a journalist in Dublin for God sake and would have been brilliant at helping her to run it. But no, we have him going off to Boston to be a in effect a car salesman! Not what Sybil would have wanted! I just despair I really do at the way the Downton story goes for some characters!
Tom left Downton in season 3, but they found a way to bring him back, so I'm hopeful, even if it is a recycled bit of plot: he goes to the U.S., gets caught up in some current event, and flees back to Downton for safety. Maybe it's political or maybe he just runs into trouble getting bootlegged whiskey from the Irish mob in Boston. Let's just hope he doesn't get a head start and have Sybbie follow him alone!
I would be extremely upset with the writers if they repeat history with Tom being forced back to Downton due to being with the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time. I do not believe Tom would be willing to get involved with those kind of people again, as he would not want to be exiled again. And as for Sybbie, he would not have her follow him, he would take her with him no matter what. He would have to be really foolish to make the same mistakes twice; he's smarter than that.
Given that he is her dead sister's husband, and her brother-in-law, the idea of them getting together is ridiculous.....
The scipt writers totally don't agree with me on this one, but I'd like to see more of Tom and Edith. They actually seem to have a pretty nice and friendly relationship going on.
I think Tom loves Edith as much as Mary, it's just Tom and Mary spend more time together which makes sense. What I really want is for Tom to become a socialist again. Where has all his fire gone? When was the last time he mentioned Ireland? I fear that if Tom's past self were to see him now he would be everything Tom initally hated. Tom disapproved of places like Downton, now he's trying to keep it going. I don't want him to burn places down again, but I would like him to regain some of his old morals. It's funny that he seems so happy yet his storyline feels to me like the most tragic. He has forgotten about everything he cared about.
What do you think?
