<p>Blue eyes are the absence of pigment, thus brown cannot underlie it. The eye colour of the respective grandparents is irrelevant since what is known is that Robert and Cora only received the recessive blue genes, at least with regards to simple Mendelian inheritance. </p><p>Of course there can be more to it, as discussed further up in the thread. </p>

<p>It is definitely more complicated than simply looking at the parents. I have brown eyes; the only one of my parents' 6 children to have them. My father's eyes were hazel and my mother's were blue. My siblings' eyes are either blue or hazel (greenish). Apparently, my maternal grandfather had brown eyes, but his eyes were damaged by illnesses and were splotchy cloudy when I knew him. </p><p>fwiw, I think they did a good job of trying to find actors and actresses who had some physical resemblance to each other (Mary to Cora and Edith to Robert). I have heard about studies showing that 1st offspring tend to look like the father, but the producers reversed it here. </p>
