As
TheAsphodelMeadows points out
here there are a couple problems regarding
James Kent's military service and age.

The first problem is, that while his father was killed in WWI, was it ever mentioned that James served in WWI?

The second is with the footnote setting a lower limit for his age as 18 in 1916. Assuming he did serve, this inference has several problems.

- Conscription was not implemented until 1916, but he could have enlisted at the age of 17 or 18 as early as 1914.
- There were also many cases of boys lying about their age and enlisting as young as 15.

If he did not serve, then it would make sense if he were born in 1900 or later, as that would have made him too young to serve, but could still be as old as 20 in 1920.
