I am just finishing Season 3 and am in shock by the tragic death of Matthew - or rather supremely disappointed. This is taking the story really too far. Come on, can't the family enjoy some happiness? Is the writer depressed or getting kicks out of tragedy? Matthew survived WWI, recovered from paralysis, got out of his marriage to Levinia..... we spectators were dragged through 3 seasons of trials and tribulations on Mary and Matthew's rocky relationship. Then, just when they finally get their happy ending and a baby boy to top it all off - they knock out the best character in the series - right after the birth of his son. Matthew was the character that kept everything going - his good naturedness, steady head.... He was the Hero "Par excellence". We were finally able to sit back and enjoy his and Mary's love and joy. Blimey, we don't even get to see his in his role as a father of heir of Downton. I feel as if the series has flopped; that there is no reason to continue. Perhaps the series should be renamed to Downton Tragedy.
