Everyone is making problems that the servants are in abundance but instead of suggesting the retirement of Carson (or mrs. Patmore etc) who is old enough and more gruff than usual (just see how he treats his wife!), they want to fire Thomas and some of the maids already work without residing in Downton and then they will have a reduced pay or at least not consume meals there.
Ok that they must put Thomas between hammer and anvil every episode, otherwise they are not happy, but why lay off young people when anyway in a couple of years or less the servants in their seventies as Carson and Mrs. Hughes will retire? Even Lady Mary, who always has her tongue poisoned for everyone, thinks that this is stupid behavior. And in this episode she was not even too mean towards Edith! Is she becoming softer of what? Someone has any idea? Maybe if the author/actors have released some spoilers about it? And why Daisy behaved so badly towards her father in law out of the blue? Anyway if even after this episode you still think that Thomas is a monster that must be stoned to death, I have my doubts about your kindness.
PS. Mrs. Hughes should ask for divorce or knock him off with a frying pan on his head next time!
