Reading some of the comments here I wonder what version of Downton some people were watching. Henry was a great addition to DA and far more engaging than Mary’s suitors since Matthew. Because he was a racing driver, that added some really interesting scenes that were very different to the usual DA script. The scenes after the race were heart-breaking and showed off some of the best acting we have seen in Season 6. What I liked best was how his character was revealed a bit more in each episode he was in – with a few red herrings along the way. He started as a slightly arrogant man, amused by Mary and happy to flirt with her. Then he becomes more ardent in pursuing Mary. The race events changed everything and made him even more determined to seize the day. When he realised he’d been too persistent, he backed right off and waited for Mary to contact him and she did. The proposal scene was a gem. They started stiff and awkward and then relaxed completely when the decision was made to marry. But it was only in the Xmas special that it was confirmed what a kind, warm, humorous and empathetic man he is. He was charming and friendly with everyone and keen to make Mary proud of him. Some viewers claim this was a personality change, I don’t think so, along the way there were plenty of clues about his personality that seem to have been missed by some people. I could have done with another episode, maybe between Episode 8 and the Xmas special, so the wedding, etc. wasn’t so rushed but apart from that I really enjoyed his character and his relationship with Mary.
