how did tom branson find out about marigold/ and who named her?
Tom figured it out on his own; as Edith said, he "guessed" - he told her himself where he had grown up there had been "quite a few Marigolds" - a number of girls had children out of wedlock, including his own cousin whose daughter was brought up as her sister, and though the family never talked about it, they all knew the truth. So he must have noticed Edith's affection for Marigold and came to that conclusion. Robert did as well, though in his case he also saw an uncanny resemblance between Marigold and Gregson.
We don't know who named Marigold, but the best guess would be Edith herself. We don't know why, if it was her, she chose Marigold. It could just be a name she really liked.
wow! thank you so much for this! it clears it up for me. really appreciate the response! Jackie C.
Here is how most of the Crawley family as well as others found out about Marigold's parentage
1. Rosamund- Edith personally broke the news
2. Violet- She was suspicious about Rosamund and Edith's closeness and made them tell her the truth
3. Cora- After Edith ran away to London, Rosamund and Violet was going to tell Cora but Mrs Drewe beat them to it
4. Robert- Marigold reminded him of Michael Gregson as well as Edith's "obsession" with the child
5. Tom- Growing up with several girls named Marigold as well as his cousin, Nuala having an out of wedlock child and Edith's affection for the little girl.
6. Mary- Mary grew suspicious about Marigold when she heard a puzzling remark about the child being a family secret between Cora and Violet and she tried getting answers out of Tom and Anna but they said nothing but they knew. In the end she figured it out and forced Tom to confirm the truth with her.
7. Bertie Pelham- Mary forced Edith to tell the truth.
8. Mirada Pelham- Edith personally told her
9. Mr Drewe- He guessed it ever since Edith asked him to adopt her.
10. Mrs Drewe- Edith and Mr Drewe were forced to tell her the truth since Mrs Drewe kept on preventing Edith to see Marigold
