Hello, can someone help me. I'd like to know where Cavenham Park (home of Larry and Amelia, former home of Lord Merton) is situated. Is it in Downton, in the neighbourhood or somewhere in Yorkshire? How far from Downton Abbey is it? The best I can find on this site is "Yorkshire". Thanks for your answer. ;-)
Thank you very much, unknown contributor, for your help. I was thinking the same. ;-)
Cavenham is in Oxfordshire at Kingston bagpuize house. Not far from Bampton Village which is where the village and church scenes are filmed
Downtown Abbey is set in Yorkshire but the house itself is Highclere Castle in Hampshire.
Hello user 220.127.116.11,
Thank you very much for your answer.
The problem was NOT to know where the real estate is situated ( as you mentionned it's in Oxfordshire) but where the fictitious "Cavenham Park" might be situated. In one scene, Violet is coming to visit Amelia and in another she comes to 'rescue' Lord Merton. I assume it can't be far from fictive Downton. (I knew that the real Highclere Castle is not in Yorkshire). Thanks anyway for having answered the question. ;-)
It must be very near Downton Village because when Lord Merton is visiting the hospital for his anemia, he goes to the Downton village hospital. His estate and home are smaller than Downton though, so he is less of a major employer in the area.
You're absolutely right. I forgot about that scene. That's indeed the proof. Otherwise he would've chosen another hospital in a big city like York to be treated. Thanks for your reaction. ;-)
How funny I should come across this site, I was just looking for the the same information. I visited Highclere Castle yesterday, coming along the drive and turning a bend, There was the spectacularly glorious house, I was quite overcome. It is lovely now to watch the series plus extra's for the seventh time and spot the pictures and furniture. I stood at the spot where Tom and the school teacher were standing when Thomas found them as they looking down into the grand hall. Really worth a visit.
Cavenham Hall, situated near Bury St. Edmonds, was demolished c. 1949. It belonged to Sir James Goldsmith's family and was sold by his father after WWII. Sir James Goldsmith named his company, Cavenham Foods, founded 1965, after his family's former home and later his US forestry interests, Cavenham Forest Industries.
Lots of scenes are filmed at locations not where near the actual main location based on the story line. Lord Merton's house appears to be the same house as the one where Aunt Constance lived in the opening scenes of Gosford Park.
What do you think?
