I would like to discuss the various characters & their value. At this time, as I view the series for the third time, it is Lady Rose who is on my last nerve. Anyone have any thoughts about her manipulative and very selfish behavior at every turn?
Well, I don't see Rose as a bad person at all. Yes, she grew up as a spoiled daughter of a rich marquess (before Shrimpie ended up with those financial troubles). And having an affair with that married man was wrong, of course. And if you'd only get to know her superficially, she might seem like just a pretty but shallow upper class party girl. But still, Rose seemed to be a very open-minded person (she was even engaged to a black guy and later got married to a Jewish guy). She was clever enough to save her father-in-law's face within the blink of an eye. (Of course, I hope that Lady Sinderby and Atticus found out later. But it wouldn't have been right to let a scandal loose in front of all those people.) So to sum this up, I don't share your bad feelings about Rose. She is not my favorite, but I don't dislike her either.

She starts out as a silly girl but goes through a great deal of character development. Her falling-in-love with Jack Ross was probably as much about wanting to be modern and shock her elders as about actual feelings, so you could argue that she is subconsciously using him, but by the time she gets to Atticus she has matuted a lot.
Besides, Rose has the endorsement of Thomas Barrow, and if Thomas sees the good in a character he has no crush on- then they ARE good, Lady Sybil, Mrs Hughes, Miss Baxterl; they are the moral corre of the series.
