After he was confronted about Peter Gordon, he just left shortly after. We never really find out if he was really Peter trying to pass himself off as Patrick Crawley or actually Patrick Crawley and too distraught that nobody would believe his story. We are only told that when he left he said it was "too much, and he couldn't go thru with it".
It semes it's implied that he was Peter. Edith wanted to believe him.

Probably the worst "storyline" of the entire series. He was a total imposter with a story (written down, no less) as easy to see through as the wine decanters. I FF through this every time. Yes, as soon as Edith mentioned the name Peter to him, he started planning his disappearance.
Such a weak and unneeded story line. The character left Downton Abbey. That is what happened. I thought it very strange that the solder spoke with a Canadian accent, and not a British one as he grew up in England.
