When the time comes, she can be the Dowager Countess of Grantham if she wants and be allowed by the king or queen. Do you think she will demand or won't.
No, Mary was never a countess, she can't be a dowager countess. Do you people even know what a dowager countess is? She is the wife a dead Earl. Mary never was married to an Earl, so she will never be the wife of a dead Earl. It is a little more complicated than that
I regret what I voted, I agree, she was not a countess! My mind has been cleared!
Edit: I agree with my original vote
Yes she is not Countess, but I saw some article. And it said that not widow of Earl but mother of Earl demand the title Dowager Countess, and king or queen allowed, they can be called/titled Dowager Countess.
Women did not get titles from Fathers or Brothers or Sons, they only get titles from husband. Lady Mary Crawley is not a title. Lady is also the courtesy title for the daughters of higher-ranking nobles: dukes, marquesses, or earls. The daughters of viscounts and barons are referred to as "The Honorable," and daughters of baronets or knights are simply called "Miss."
Jeez, I am confused, just ignore any other comment/vote I have made on this post!
It’s fictional, so technically anything’s possible. However, the Brits and especially those controlling the peerage are very stick-up-the-butt, so any scenario where Mary could get any title is unlikely.
Geez, I voted yes but now want to change my answer. The Dowager Countess Violet "Granny" was Dowager Countess because of her husband. So it would seem that eventually Cora would be the next in line and Mary is sadly out of the running since Matthew died and took with him the ability to be the next Earl of Grantham, which is what Mary would have needed to eventually be Dowager Countess. If Mary's son George is to be the next Earl, then his wife would be the next Dowager Countess far into the future.
Well no she won't be the dowager countess and well even if not immediately. When George accedes to the earldom she will still be named Lady Mary Talbot. However, the king and queen can grant her the use of dowager countess as if Matthew hadn't died she would have been countess and being the mother of the current countess it could work. But the title of Dowager countess can only be used for as long as she doesn't remarry as she has married Mr. Talbot. She can't and will not use the title
What do you think?
