Biography
Early Life
Born in 1845, Patrick was the eldest of at least two children born to the 4th Earl of Grantham and the Countess of Grantham. He definitely had one younger brother, who was the father of James Crawley, and was born into relatively impoverished nobility. His mother was a woman, who, according to Violet, "made everything dark" and used to live in Crawley House.

Marriage and life at Downton
In 1868, Patrick married Violet; she brought no money with her on her marriage as, despite being the daughter of a baronet, her family, like Patrick's, was impoverished. Violet, now the Countess of Grantham, gave birth to two children, a son and heir, Robert, in 1869, and a daughter, Rosamund, in 1870. Not following in their mother's footsteps, her children married into money rather than nobility. The Countess was against Robert's engagement and marriage to the American heiress Cora Crawley, in 1888; it is currently unknown as to how Patrick reacted, but it is known that he tied Cora's fortune into Downton Abbey so that the title of 'Earl of Grantham' wouldn't become impoverished again, and both Patrick and his wife reaped the benefits of Cora's fortune.

Death
In 1898, Patrick died. It is unknown under what circumstances he died; he may have died a normal death, which is likely as neither Robert, nor Rosamund, Cora or Violet ever mentioned him having an accident or passing away through anything other than natural means.
