Craig with John Bates.

Craig is Bates's cellmate.  Bates told his wife he was not too sure about Craig when they first became cell mates in 1920. Despite Anna's mother's advice to never make an enemy by accident, it was clear there were tensions between them.

Despite Bates's insistence he was innocent, Craig calls him a murderer. Bates first warned him to leave him alone. Then, after Bates saw Craig with a guard, Craig threatened to harm Bates if he did not stay silent about that. Bates then threatened Craig physically. Craig once again called Bates a murderer.

Craig attempted to frame Bates by planting drugs in his bed. Fortunately, another prisoner warned Bates, who found it just in time before the guards came in to investigate. Craig called them bastards, to which Bates replied there were a few in that prison.

When evidence in the form of testimony by Audrey Bartlett (Bates's former wife Vera's friend) came to light that would free Bates, Craig and the prison guard Durrant leaned on Mrs Bartlett to withhold the testimony. Bates found this out and threatened Craig in no uncertain terms (see photo above): his physical safety was in danger unless he and Durrant removed the pressure (or incentive) from Mrs Bartlett. Craig and Durrant must have acted soon thereafter, since Mrs. Bartlett gives testimony to Lord Grantham's lawyer Murray right away and Bates is released from prison.
