Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the third and likely final film. The film was leaked by actress Imelda Staunton as being greenlit on a BBC Radio 2 breakfast show starting at 6:30 AM UTC 20-Mar-2024. It was officially announced by Focus Features on May 13th, 2024 with the preliminarily title of Downton Abbey 3. It will be a sequel film to the Downton Abbey: A New Era and presumably the final one in a trilogy (possibly the final chapter in visual adaptations of the franchise). Early sources have filming starting in summer 2024 with a 2025 release (in the late fall, if the pattern persists).

On June 26, 2024, Focus Features announced an expected premiere date of September 12, 2025, in the UK and USA.

On March 27. 2025, a poster was released by Focus Features giving the third film the title Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

On April 2, 2025, a teaser trailer was revealed at CinemaCon and later on June 2, 2025, Focus Features posted one on YouTube.

The world premiere occurred at Leicester Square Odeon, London on September 3, 2025.

An organization called "Average Socialite" managed to arrange an early screening on August 26, 2025 for its members at the AMC Empire on West 42nd in New York City. AMC appears to be giving an early access screening on September 10, 2025.

Many international premieres actually happened earlier by date than the overall UK/US premiere as seen at the list of international release dates.

Synopsis

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE, the cinematic return of the global phenomenon, follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter.

Plot

The film follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. When Mary finds herself at the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace. The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future.

Production

Filming is expected to start in the summer of 2024. The film is a Carnival Films production, with Focus Features and Universal Pictures International distributing. Focus Features have announced that as expected Julian Fellowes will write the script with Simon Curtis directing, as well as Gareth Neame, Fellowes, and Liz Trubridge producing.

During production, it was announced that the film is set to be released in theaters on September 12, 2025.

About the last day of shooting, Joanne Froggatt had the following quote:

"The last day of the shoot was really special. Lots of people came in, Michelle [Dockery] included, who weren't filming on that day, and we just all kind of — it actually was myself and Brendan [Coyle] who shot the final moment of the shoot, which was really special. And everyone was there and kind of, like, cheering on, and we all gave each other hugs, and reflected on those 15 years."

Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale special

On August 11, 2025, Variety announced a primetime special (produced by UTAS UK Productions) is set to air on NBC to celebrate the third and final film on September 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and available to stream the next day on Peacock. The special will feature cast and crew members at the Savoy Hotel in London sharing memories and never-before-heard stories from their time with the show and the films. Broadcast outside the U.S. is unconfirmed.
