Downton Abbey is a British television period drama, produced by Carnival Films for the ITV Network (ITV1 and UTV) - STV in Scotland have not broadcast the programme. It was created and principally written by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellows.
A stately country house, a noble family and a succession crisis are the backdrop for this drama by writer Julian Fellowes about the lives of aristocrats and servants in the years before World War I. Downton Abbey stars Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern and others.
Highclere Castle in Hampshire was used as Downton Abbey, with the servants' living areas constructed and filmed at Ealing Studios.
