Hugh MacClare, Marquess of Flintshire,[1] who was known to his family and close friends by his nickname, Shrimpie, is a minister with the Foreign Office, who has some dealings with the Turkish Embassy. His wife, Susan, is a cousin of Robert's. He and his wife have a daughter, Lady Rose MacClare.
At some point after 1889, Susan visited Downton[2] but it is currently unknown as to whether she was married to Hugh at the time or if he came with her.
After William is fatally injured in 1917 after saving Matthew's life in the Battle of Ameins, Violet telephones him in order to have William moved from the infirmary in Leeds to Downton Abbey.
