"He’s a fortune hunter, my dear. A pleasant one, I admit, but a fortune hunter."
Violet Crawley to Rosamund Painswick during the latter's short affair with Lord Hepworth[src]

Jinx Hepworth[1], Baron Hepworth[2] is a nobleman invited to Downton Abbey for the Christmas and New Year's celebrations in 1919/1920 by Rosamund Painswick.

Rosamund's mother, Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham is well acquainted with the Hepworth family, having been pursued by Lord Hepworth’s father in the late 1860s.

However, she soon learns Lord Hepworth is in debt and has had to sell off his family estates, Hatton Park and Loch Earle, and heavily mortgage Hepworth House, his London home on Grosvenor Square. He insists to Violet that his feelings for Rosamund are sincere, but Violet remains convinced he loves Rosamund's money more. Violet consults Robert, who says it is alright for Rosamund to marry a fortune hunter, but agrees with her that the money should be tied up.

Rosamund considers marrying Lord Hepworth, even though she is aware he is bankrupt, since she insists to her family she is “tired of being alone”. However, the process is being helped along by Rosamund's new maid, Marigold Shore, who is eager to see her mistress marry Hepworth.

Anna notices that Lord Hepworth and Shore, seem to be very close and friendly to each other on several occasions. Anna informs Mary, and they lead Rosamund to catch Hepworth and Shore being intimate together. Rosamund learns Shore was only interested in her marrying Hepworth so she and her lover could be near. Shore and Hepworth are told to leave the house first thing in the morning, with Shore stating “don’t worry we will.” Rosamund is shaken and swears, angered by the discovery, remarking “I so hate it when Mama is proved right." Nevertheless she is happy to be free of the whole situation.

  1. Downton Abbey Series 2 Scripts (Official): Page 494. Julian Fellowes' notes state: "When I wrote this I had just seen the 1944 Rita Hayworth Musical Cover Girl, and appearing in it was a model called Jinx Falkenburg who played herself. She was an interesting character, really, the first supermodel, and while her acting never generated much heat, she and her husband, the journalist Tex McCrary, more or less pioneered the chat show, though how grateful we should be for that is open to question. At any rate, I thought she was worth doffing my cap to, so I used her name here. It didn’t matter that Violet was talking about a man because it’s a name for either sex." Thus, this confirms that Hepworth's first name is actually Jinx and it is not a nickname.
  2. Episode 4 of Series 6 reveals that Jinx Hepworth must be a Baron. An Earl would be announced as "the Earl of [title]" (Carson announces an Earl in this manner in Series 5 Episode 6), a Duke or a Marquess would be announced in a similar fashion, and a Viscount would be announced as "The Viscount [title]"; their widows would be Dowager Countess, Dowager Duchess, Dowager Marchioness and Dowager Viscountess when verbally announced (Violet, for example, is always announced as "The Dowager Countess" unless informally amongst family). Baron is the only degree of the Peerage that is always referred to, both verbally and in correspondence, as "Lord [title]" and that is how Lord Hepworth is announced and spoken about - "Lord Hepworth", which is how a Baron is verbally addressed.
