MrCharkham

Mr Charkham was the lawyer for Reggie Swire. He visits Matthew Crawley in 1920 to inform him of Mr Swire's new will, made after Lavinia died. He informs Matthew that he was the third of three potential heirs, as Mr Swire did not wish to divide his fortune. The first died before Reggie of Spanish flu, but the second, Clive Pullbrook, is nowhere to be found.

He later writes to Matthew informing him Pullbrook is dead, but the date needs to be confirmed: if Pullbrook died before Reggie, Matthew will inherit Reggie's money, but if he died after then Pullbrook's heirs will inherit instead. Eventually the date is confirmed, as well as that Matthew is Reggie's heir. Matthew however does not wish to take it, feeling it would be wrong as he feels he is responsible for Lavinia's death.

Mr Charkham comes to Downton with a letter written by Mr. Swire for Matthew before his death. Matthew does not wish to open it, but his wife does. After confirming Reggie learned from Lavinia of Matthew's feelings, Matthew accepts the inheritance.
