"I'm sure you will want me to thank Lady Rose for consenting to present the prizes today. We are always glad for interest from the abbey. And finally, thank you all for coming. It is most appreciated."
—Mr Dawes[src]

Mr Dawes is the headmaster of the Downton School as of 1924 and 1925. Molesley calls on him in 1925 to help Daisy prepare for her exams.

Mr Dawes attends the wedding of Carson and Mrs Hughes. He notes Molesley's assistance of Daisy in her education, and questions him if he has missed his vocation after hearing Molesley profess his respect for education.

Dawes proposes that Molesley take a general knowledge exam, as he wants to put Molesley's respect for education, which he has come to admire, to use. He later brings Daisy and Molesley the results of their exams, asking the latter to join the village school's teaching staff.

Later, when one of the permanent teachers decides to retire and move away, Dawes offers both the position and the cottage that comes with it to Molesley, who eventually accepts.
