The RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early hours of 15 April, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.
The sinking of the Titanic resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. Casualties included historical figures J.J. Astor and Charles Hays. People that survived the sinking included the Countess of Rothes and Madeleine Astor.
News of the Titanic sinking comes to Downton Abbey at the very beginning of the series. The story is in the newspaper and there is a subsequent telegram to Lord Grantham from his lawyer, George Murray, who has a partner in New York. The telegram informed him that his cousin and heir presumptive, James Crawley, and James's only son, Patrick, were on the passenger list and did not appear to have been rescued.
James Crawley's body was among those pulled from the sea and buried in Canada. Patrick's body was never recovered.
