- Pickup and Downton Abbey co-star David Robb had previously started together in the 1982 television film adaptation of Ivanhoe. Pickup would also go on to star in the 1997 adaptation of the same story, which co-starred Ron Donachie and Susan Lynch.
- He starred alongside Patrick Kennedy, James Fox, and Imelda Staunton in Cambridge Spies (2003 mini-series), for which Gareth Neame was an executive producer.
- He is most known for his role as Norman Cousins in the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) and its sequel movie The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) which featured Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton.
