Samuel "Sam" Thawley is a love interest of Rose MacClare.
He first appears in Series 4, when he notices Rose MacClare in the dance hall in York with Anna Bates. He asks her for a dance, during which she lies to him about being a servant at Downton Abbey. He seems to develop a little bit of a crush on her. Unfortunately, another man, who is drunk
Sam and Rose.
He later turns up at the doors for the servants quarters at Downton looking for her. She eventually appears dressed as a maid and he professes his love for her. He tells her he is a gardener. She kisses him but then tells him their relationship must end because she is to marry a farmer.
