Mary and Edith first started to get along when Mary wished Edith happiness and admitted they were not always on good terms right before Strallan jilted Edith, then Mary and Edith grew considerably closer following Sybil's death. Correct me if I'm wrong but Mary supported Edith's decision to be a journalist (though she did not approve of Gregson). Still, they were starting to become friends and I think they will truly be loving sisters in season 4.
