Lavina's estate[]
I'm currently on series 3, and I'm left thinking over the will/estate left to Matthew from Lavina's father. Sure, I understand his thinking, but who else will the estate go to at the time in England? The politicos? Perhaps the Monarchy/King? Not like they would use it any better than George.
I can't see why no one has (yet) suggested 'just do some good work with the estate'. Sure it'll save Downton, but they could just as easily improved the hospital, put funding towards one of Isobel Grey's many efforts.
